Mike Bennett is an experienced researcher, adviser and consultant with a track record of working across the public and private sectors, with national and local governments and with international bodies. He has particular expertise in generating and capturing learning for senior people based on qualitative research and deep rooted engagement. He is Principal and co-owner of RCS.
From 1998-2010 Mike held senior policy positions at SOLACE (the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and Senior Managers) before becoming Managing Director, based in Westminster.
Previously Mike was a Research Fellow and lead consultant at the Scottish Local Authorities Management Centre at the University of Strathclyde and worked with the majority of Scottish councils as well as a range of other public bodies, especially in social and health care services for older people.
This experience covers a 20-year period working closely with chief executives and senior managers in local government, both as a director of their professional society – SOLACE – and as an independent adviser and researcher.
Mike has been involved in numerous national policy groups related to improvement, performance and good governance and has delivered research and consultancy for local authorities across the UK, central government departments and devolved administrations, as well as for major charities, private sector corporations and international financial institutions.
Mike has been a Senior Adviser to Newton since 2011 where he has taken part in a number of cutting edge integration and transformation projects across health and social care in England.
He has been a Fellow at the University of St Andrews School of Management since 2015.
In early 2019 Mike published a report co-authored with Professor Kevin Orr for the professional bodies for senior managers in local government in the UK, USA and Canada into how senior professional leaders use storytelling as part of their leadership repertoire. The research provides strong empirical and theoretical bases for using stories as a way of generating insight into the organisational reality and leadership challenges as experienced by chief executives and other top managers.
Mike is used to working in and adapting to a range of different cultural environments. As well as having worked in London and in all 4 UK nations, Mike has worked in a wide range of international contexts including in Europe, sub-Saharan and North Africa and with governmental bodies from USA, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, China, Mauritius, Bahrain and Kosovo.
